C1D1 REquirements

C1D1, which stands for Class I, Division 1, is a classification system defined by the National Electric Code (NEC) as enumerated by the National Fire Protection Association, Publication 70 (NFPA 70). It defines the required electrical components, wiring, and other safety features that must be installed in hazardous locations.

In our use case, this hazardous location is in cannabis extraction rooms, in which hydrocarbon extractions take place, making the need for proper electrical, ventilation, and explosion-protection features not only required by law but also extremely important to the safety of the workers who will be using the space to perform cannabis extractions.

Class I, Division 1 spaces are, as defined by NFPA 70:

“a Class I, Division 1 location shall be any location where one of the following conditions exists:

(1) An ignitable concentration of flammable gas or vapor can exist under normal operating conditions.

(2) An ignitable concentration of flammable gas or vapor can exist frequently because of repair or maintenance operations or because of leakage.

(3) Breakdown or faulty operation of equipment or processes might release an ignitable concentration of flammable gas or vapor and might also cause simultaneous failure of electrical equipment in such a way as to directly cause the electrical equipment to become a source of ignition.”

For typical hydrocarbon-based cannabis extraction processes, an ignitable concentration of flammable gas is likely to be present under normal conditions and this is why a Class I, Division 1 space is required in the vast majority of, if not all, regulated markets.

We help cannabis processors get their business up and running quickly and save them from wasting money building out leased spaces by offering a turn-key C1D1 mobile cannabis extraction laboratory which is already built out to meet C1D1 definitions and other safety/regulatory requirements.

Since there will be flammable concentrations;

The atmosphere must be diluted and evacuated.

Sustainable Kits provides a pre-installed, explosion-proof system designed to detect hydrocarbons in the air and then a fan system that will automatically kick in whenever the air concentrations meet specific levels.

Our C1D1 extraction labs provide the safest Class I, Division 1 laboratory to be used for butane and propane extraction.

Explosion-proof mechanical and operational components must be installed and used.

We include a full explosion-proof setup, ensuring your operation meets C1D1 definitions and the safety of your lab workers.

Concentrations of flammable gasses in the air must be measured.

We provide a pre-configured system that provides a read-out of atmospheric conditions in the work-space.

A system that interprets the data collected from air contaminants and responds accordingly must be used.

Our extraction rooms come with a full auto-ventilation and exhaust system which communicates with the air measurements.

A fire suppression system must be installed and fully functional.

Our extraction rooms include an automatic stand-alone fire suppression system (if needed/there is not another one already installed in the space.
